Textual Healing 01.08.2009

We are huge U2 fans. They are that rarest of breeds in the music industry; a rock band with original members over 40 that are still making relevant music. And, unlike a lot of you selfish, envious bastards out there, we won't hate on Bono for his humanitarian crusades. Sure, he comes off as pompous. Big deal. Most rock stars at Bono's stage of life are either dead, in and out of rehab, spun off into Axl Rose-like ego-trips, going on "reunion" tours, or otherwise tarnishing the legacy of their music. In a culture that celebrates the vapidity of, for instance, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag, it's hard to get real upset at Bono for trying to do the right thing. He is using his celebrity to help people dying of starvation and AIDS, and the Grind won't tolerate any Gawker-like snark questioning the manner in which he does it.,

But the Irish singer is in too deep writing Op-Eds for the New York Times. Halfway through this wine-soaked, dream-like montage of Dublin at Christmas, the story inexplicably morphs into a tribute to Frank Sinatra's painting prowess. Bono is too much of a lyricist to make this piece work. Unconventional grammar and stream-of-consciousness imagery may seem profound when sung in a soaring tenor, over the Edge's sparkling guitar. But in print, the same style just comes off as fuzzy. Unlike a song lyric, an editorial is supposed to finish somewhere near where it starts.

The rest of the Times opinion page is open letters to Obama. Paul Krugman has more advice on Obama’s economic stimulus plan. William Kristol and Roger Cohen comment on what we can expect from the President-elect’s foreign policy. Kristol is hopeful. Cohen apparently thinks Jimmy Carter should be named Secretary of Defense. Well, okay. Not Carter. Just James Zogby.

Digital cameras are everywhere. no longer can a guy get drunk and act like a fool without fear of the party pictures showing up online the next day. But for all the drawbacks, the proliferation of digital cameras has some astonishingly helpful implications for self-government, as the You Tube riots attest. Last Wednesday, in plain sight of an Oakland crowd, a police officer for Bay Area Rapid Transit, Johannes Mehserle, shot a man who was cuffed and on his stomach. Had the story of Oscar Grant's shooting only appeared in print, it might not have had such a galvanizing effect. But the riveting, gut-wrenching video taken at the scene sparked a civil unrest in Oakland that, so far, has forced the officer to reign.

Sure, it's annoying that you can't get drunk and wear a lampshade without someone taking pictures. But we are thrilled that these "citizen-journalists, otherwise known as "people" have helped to ensure that a bad cop gets his due. There's something exciting about living in a time when justice doesn't always have to rely on one person's word against another.

Now, the courts must do their part. If this ex-officer is given a slap on the wrist, the streets of Oakland could explode in a way that makes the Rodney King riots look tame.

There's lighter news, too. Sienna Miler has been kicked off the Ridley Scott Robin Hood project, Nottingham. Depending on who you read, Miller lost the role either because she didn't get along with anyone on the set, and "projected the wrong image" for Maid Marion, or because Russel Crowe is too fat to do love scenes with her. Either way, it's funny. Sienna Miller is annoying. She's an actress who is more famous for sleeping with other women's husbands than for anything she's done on screen. Miller should go back to London and leave our sweet, innocent American boys alone.

Black Sports Online points out that Donovan McNabb acted like a ass yesterday. The Philly QB was flagged for taunting late in the Eagles win over the Giants. After being run out of bounds into the Giants sideline, McNabb picked up a phone and pretended he was talking to the Giants coaches upstairs. Because it was in the heat of the moment, the taunt wasn't as annoying the premeditated, Chad Johnson/Joe Horn/Terrell Owens celebrations, but still proves that McNabb, beloved of broadcasters, can be as big a jerk as anyone in the league. If Randy Moss had done something like that, he would have been brutalized in the media all week. Then again, if Bret Favre had made a fake phone call like that, he would have been celebrated for "just having fun" and lionized for being a throwback.

There's other NFL stuff too, besides Baltimore's bruising win over Tennessee (the game of the year so far) the Steelers slapdown of the Chargers, and Jake Delhomme's disaster against the Cardinals. For instance, Tony Dungy is leaving Indy and Josh McDaniels was hired to coach the Broncos. But who cares? The story of the day is Gunaxin's fond remembrance of primordial video game sensation, Temco Super Bowl. You've got to love the pink end zone.

Paul Greco at Fantasypros.com says he drafted his 2009 MLB fantasy team naked. He suggests that everyone else do the same.

Busted Coverage has news of biblical proportions: Erin Andrews has a hot sister. Dan Patrick blogged on Sports Illustrated that he watched the BCS game "in a private suite" with Erin and Kendra Andrews, and BC has hunted up some pics of the other Andrews sister. The brunette is a dancer (the real kind, on stage, wearing clothes) and, obviously, has thighs of steel. Dan Patrick, married with four kids, obviously, has a very understanding wife.

GearMania: The Biggest Balls

As a kid, did you never get the awesome tree-house you always wanted? Right that childhood wrong right with Free Spirit Spheres.

Okay, sure, these tightly-built, prefabricated balls of wood or fiberglass start around $40,000, but no price is too high to live like a Wookie. If you aren't ready to lay down the 40 g's just yet, head up to British Colombia and rent one for a week. We are sure you'll have… Wait for it... Wait for it... ...a ball. (Sorry, we had to do it.)

Sandra Bullock is playing mom to her stepdaughter while the five-year-old's pornstar mom is behind bars. Porn actress Janine Lindemulder has been sentenced to six months in federal prison after she was found guilty of failing to pay more than $200,000 in income tax. Her ex-husband and Bullock's current man, Jesse James, has custody of the child while Lindemulder is in jail. Sources tell the National Enquirer that Bullock wants to be a mom and is thrilled to try motherhood with Sunny.

This is lovely gesture on Bullock's part, taking care of another woman's child. The only way Janine could possibly repay Sandra for the kindness is to make mad, passionate love to her for hours, have Jesse James record the whole thing and then "accidentally" leak the video online.

Reuters reports that nerds can take a new "flirting course" being offered at Potsdam University, near Berlin. The 440 students enrolled in the master's IT program will learn "how to write flirtatious text messages and emails, impress people at parties and cope with rejection." The course is part of the social skills section of the IT course and designed to ease entry into the world of work. Students also learn body language, public-speaking, stress management and presentation skills.

Wait. You mean "Baby, I want to slip my flash drive into your USB port" isn't a good pickup line?

Our founder and leader continues to amaze in this CNN interview. Hef says Playboy is always embracing change, and points out that we were one of first magazines to go online.

Yeah, we hear Playboy's website is completely awesome. Supposedly, the site even has a pretty good blog.

BabeWatch: Frieda Pinto

Did anybody else watch the Golden Globes last night? Just kidding. We didn't either. Like every other red-blooded American, we were watching the season premier of 24. We spent our night watching Keifer Sutherland be a badass, happy that the most action-packed, overtly jingoistic show in the history of television has returned. Jack is back, bitches.

But apparently, "Slumdog Millionare" won a few awards -- in between the cussing at the awards show. The Grinder thought "Slumdog" was excellent, if not the revelation many critics did. The hero was a little too silent and slack-jawed to really root for. And, once we got passed being dazzled by the brutal poverty of India, the love story was a little thin. Then again, you can't blame any guy for falling in love with Frieda Pinto. We did.
